1. WHAT THE TRAINING MATERIAL CONTAINS
The material is a complete set of chapters written for inspectors who work on ships, in the yard and in service:
• The marine framework and the roles, classification societies, flag and port State, owner, yard, and where the welding inspector fits in.
• Annex: Construction monitoring, how inspection is carried out in practice during newbuilding.
• Terminology, ship structure and drawings, structural members, ship terminology and how to read shipyard drawings.
• Loads and stresses in the hull, why the hull is built the way it is, and which areas are critical.
• Marine materials and their approval, hull steels and grades, certification and approval of materials.
• The processes as used in the yard, the welding processes you meet in shipbuilding and their typical problems.
• Corrosion in the marine environment, and coating inspection, corrosion mechanisms, protective coatings and coating checks.
• Acceptance and failures against marine criteria, imperfections, acceptance limits and typical service failures.
• Non-destructive testing in the marine sector, VT, PT, MT, UT and RT as applied in the yard and on board.
• Corrosion allowances and thickness measurement, diminution, allowances and thickness gauging.
• Safety, enclosed spaces and hot work, permits to work, gas-freeing and safe working on board.
• Repairs and in-service inspection, repair practice, dry-docking and surveys during service.
• Ethics, impartiality and reporting, the conduct of the inspector, independence and clear reporting.
Two further modules complete the programme:
• Welding of piping and pressure systems
• Gas carriers and gas-fuelled ships
2. WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW BEFORE YOU START (PREREQUISITE)
This is a specialization programme. It does not teach welding technology from the beginning; it applies it to the marine sector. For this reason, previous knowledge of welding technology is required.
You should already be familiar with the basics of welding processes and equipment, consumables, basic welding metallurgy, weld imperfections and their causes, WPS and welder qualification, and welding symbols on drawings. If you do not have this background, you can first follow our Weld Entry programme, which also runs on Moodle as distance learning. Weld Entry (5 days timeframe) gives you the basic welding technology knowledge you need, and you can then continue with Welding Inspection in the Marine Sector.
3. HOW THE COURSE RUNS
• The course is distance learning. It takes place entirely on our Moodle platform, in English.
• It is available from Tuesday 22 September 2026.
• Your access to the platform remains active for 20 calendar days. You can log in whenever you wish, according to your own availability.
• You receive the notes as a personalised e-book. Printed notes can also be posted to you within Greece.
• After completion of each chapter one test will be available to check your understanding (10 questions per chapter)
4. EXAMINATION AND CERTIFICATE
• When you complete the training, you sit an examination of 100 multiple-choice questions (4 possible answers, 1 correct).
• You have 120 minutes to answer them.
• The examination is taken online through a proctoring system. You do not need to attend the premises of the Greek Welding Institute.
• The passing score is 60%.
• On success you receive the certificate Certified Senior Welding Inspector for the Marine Sector (CSWIM), issued under ISO/IEC 17024.
• The training and the examination are provided in English.
• If you do not pass, you may sit the examination again within 30 days.
5. FEES
• Training: €550 (no VAT apply)for the Welding Inspection in Marine Sector
• Training : 50€ (no VAT apply) for the Weld Entry Module
• Examination: €180 + VAT (includes participation in the examination and issue of the certificate)
• Re-examination: €90 + VAT
